This first film by the director of photography Roger Racine was unlike anything else in Quebec cinema in the post-war period. The Butler’s Night Off was closer to the “film noir” style in fashion south of the border than to the melodramas and radio serials which dominated Quebec film production at the time. The film also stands out for the presence of William Shatner—the future Captain Kirk of the television series Star Trek—in his very first screen role, that of one of the small-time hoods on the trail of the film’s protagonist. The Butler’s Night Off was never commercially released.
