In 1923, the discovery of a vein of gold caused a gold rush along the Cadillac fault in the Abitibi region. A second wave of settlement in the region was promoted by the Quebec government between 1932 and 1939. This time the settlement program was intended to give land to the unemployed in the province’s cities. Some forty parishes were established in Abitibi during these years. This document shows the hard labour of clearing the land that the settlers undertook.
